In the heart of true artist of any kind, one thing holds true: they do not seek their own fame. They instead seek out the continuation of the art and to use it as a way to commune with others. Such an artist is Harlingen native Angel Rodriguez.
Rodriguez calls his journey as a musical artist, community organizer and as the co-proprietor of The Prelude in Harlingen one he welcomes any and all to join. The Prelude is located in historic downtown Harlingen. They serve sandwiches, coffee and are home to Jane's Bakery.
Not new to the music scene, Rodriguez has performed his own material armed with his trusty guitar skills. “I have been performing and writing for well over 10 years, and have been actively promoting and organizing music events for close to about 7 years here in the Rio Grande Valley. Including Music after Hours in McAllen for the Art Walk and now The Prelude, where our focus is on becoming a space for songwriters on the regional and national circuit.”
One of the ways he accomplishes this is by holding RGV Songwriters in the Round Shows in the Prelude. “In the round" refers to three or more songwriters sharing the same stage and singing individual songs in rotation. The main purpose of the monthly shows is to bring local songwriters to the center stage. “As artists we want to create something and reach people and connect with them, we want to bring joy or strength or catharsis…” He states that the shows are part of his mission to grow the songwriter culture in the RGV. He welcomes songwriters of all genres because of his passion for the culture and his love of a person who is willing to express themselves with music.
