La Plaza Mall
According to the new plans, La Plaza Mall will feature an all-new 245,000-square-foot wing that will fit four junior anchors, 50 new stores and a dining plaza with six first-to-market restaurants.
La Plaza Mall is one of the most visited places in the Rio Grande Valley. Locals and tourists have been shopping there since it was first built in November 1976. Since then, the mall has had numerous changes throughout the years, but nothing as major as what’s about to come. For more than a decade, the team behind La Plaza Mall had a plan to expand it significantly. Now in its 40th year, the new owners are taking the next step and giving it its biggest extension yet.
According to the new plans, the mall will feature an all-new 245,000-square-foot wing that will fit four junior anchors, 50 new stores and a dining plaza with six first-to-market restaurants. Two new parking decks will accommodate up to 2,000 vehicles. One of them will be located in front of Macy’s on 10th Street. It will be completed by Back Friday of 2016. The second parking deck will begin construction in January 2017 and will be completed by the fall of next year. It will be connected to the Dillard’s store.
It is expected that with the completion of this project the local economy will benefit from the expansion. La Plaza Mall has long benefited from local shoppers as well as an influx of Mexican consumers, making it one of the most profitable shopping complexes in the nation. More stores will also bring more jobs for the residents of the Rio Grande Valley.
Area Director of Marketing & Business Development of La Plaza Mall Isabel Rodriguez is confident the expansion will bring prosperity to the region in multiple ways: “It’s definitely an economic driver for the city of McAllen and the area overall,” said Rodriguez. “We are very exited to bring more jobs and opportunity while providing first class products.”
